Data Search Tool Tutorial
5. Use filters to narrow property information by specific criteria (SHIP)
This tutorial will show you how to limit the properties displayed to show exactly what you are interested in.
*This tutorial assumes that you’re familiar with the information that the SHIP section of the Data Search Tool provides, as explained in Tutorial 4.
You can use the filter tools to see where Project-Based Section 8 properties are located.
You now have a map of all project-based HUD Section 8 properties in New York City.
Switch to the table view to see a list of data about each of these properties and select what information you would like to display.
This example shows how to create a simple table with names, unit count, borough, address, and HUD Project-Based Rental Assistance contract start year.
You can sort the table by clicking on the column header. For example, sort the properties by unit count to see the largest project-based HUD Section 8 properties in New York City.
If you click it again, you will switch the sort order. Now, the smallest properties appear at the top.
To start a new search, clear all of the filters by selecting “Reset Filters” next to the “Submit” button. If you do not want to reset all of the filters you can open up the filter group and click the “x” next to a criterion.
You can also search for properties based on more complicated criteria. You might want to display properties that are currently locked into affordability restrictions and are located in the Bronx or Manhattan.
First, try limiting the properties to those in the Bronx exclusively.
You can see that only properties in the Bronx are displayed.
Making multiple selections within a single filter WIDENS the search to display properties meeting ANY of your criteria
Making selections under multiple filters NARROWS the search to show only the properties meeting ALL of your criteria.
First, broaden the search by making multiple borough selections under the “Location” filter to show properties in both the Bronx and Manhattan.
Now MORE properties appear on the map.
Next, narrow the search by selecting criteria under a second filter. Only show properties that currently have affordability restrictions in place.
Fewer properties now appear on the map because the Data Search Tool is displaying properties that are located in the Bronx or Manhattan AND are locked into affordability restrictions.
From here, you can broaden the search by making additional selections under the criteria “Location” or “Subsidies.” You can also narrow your search further by making additional selections under new criteria, such as “Financial” or “Physical Condition” until you have displayed the properties you are most interested in.
