Data Search Tool Tutorial

4. Find and interpret data on individual properties on the map (SHIP)

Steps:

SHIP is a database of individual properties in the five boroughs of New York City that currently receive (or have received) affordable housing subsidies.  The subsidy programs included are the following:

- Mitchell-Lama
- HUD financing and insurance
- HUD project-based rental insurance
- Low Income Housing Tax Credit

First, look at the full set of SHIP properties.

The properties are grouped in bubbles to make viewing easier.

As you zoom in, these bubbles will start to break apart into individual properties.

Zoom in towards your neighborhood.  Clicking on one of the bubbles will open a short description of that property.  This includes its name, how many buildings and units it comprises, which portfolios affect it, and when its affordability began and will end.

Click on one of the bubbles to find out more about the property.

If you clicked on a bubble with several properties in it, you can use the arrows on the top left of the bubble to look at each property.

To see more information about a specific property, click on the “More Details” link below at the bottom of the description.  This link may not be visible until you scroll down.

A “Property Description” window will open.  This will list all the information about this property in the SHIP online database and an approximate Google street view picture.

To get the most information possible, click on the “Download Full Report” link below the Google Street View.

The full report is a PDF that includes many details about the property that are not accessible through the Data Search Tool.  For example, you can see the actual dates when each individual subsidy will start and end.
